And Every Night We Dance: Contact Improvisation in Berlin

I am part of a secret cult. You recognize us from the blisters on our feet. And from our soft walk. We walk like children. There is hardly any tension left in our bodies. The dance takes it away, layer by layer, step by step.

We meet in old warehouses and creative spaces in the city. Somebody plays the saxophone or some drums or a weird sounding FX guitar. Sometimes there is no music at all. Only the sounds of our bodies: jumping, stamping, breathing. Laughing.

The Meeting of Strange Bodies

We dance, we sweat together. We are in contact, in touch, and improvise. We explore the space, explore the movement. Two strange bodies meet. Sometimes three, four, five… We crawl around each other like panthers, roll over each other, share weight, press and push against the other bodies, lift them up or fly up in the air.

And afterwards I ride home on my bike through the nightly city, my hair is all sweaty and my body is happy and full of prana. I pass by all these bars and night clubs and I see them there, drinking and smoking, and I only think I have found something better. I found the cure.

United in Movement

Dancing is healing. It saved my life already in high school and brought me through all the awkwardness and social alienation of my teenager years. In the club I felt united with the people. The drums, the beats, the movement made us all the same, all moving in trance to the same rhythm.

Growing up, at some point I stopped clubbing because of all the intoxications there. The ecstasy of a night has a sour aftertaste when you feel like shit the next day.

Intimacy, Real, Raw Contact

These new dances are sober. Without the bad awakening. Instead, there is real, raw contact. On a very primal level. Intimacy.

This can be tough. You have to learn to clearly know and demarcate your borders. How far do you want to go? How to get in and out of a situation with a partner. You will reject and be rejected.

Contact Dance: a Sandbox for Social Situations

But it is all not such a big deal at the dancefloor. It’s a playground where the challenges of social life are not so scary. In fact, in this safe space you can practice the stuff that scares you.

Yes, you learn a lot, about yourself and your interaction with others. Above all you will learn one thing: that you and your body are okay. That you are accepted and beautiful and that people will want to dance with you and hold you and be hold by you.
